Evening

Recently, we’ve been thinking quite a lot about how to imbue giclée prints with some of the tactile feel of traditional printing techniques. We buy quite a few giclées ourselves and generally no matter how awesome the image, when you get your tube in the mail and slide your print out of it, the end product feels somehow plain, lacking. We thought: how can we bring the magic back? How can we make these things special?

So when our friend and longtime associate Glenn Barr agreed to let us use one of his most evocative and sought-after images, “Evening,” for an edition, we jumped at the chance to put some of our ideas to work.

First things first: we needed some prints to work with, so we set about color proofing the image until we were blue in the face. When finally satisfied, we printed the edition on archival Hahnemühle German Etching paper. These were then trimmed and mounted with a kind of inlay process into a debossed impression on 300gsm Arches watercolor paper, which is some of the thickest, stiffest paper I’ve ever held in my hands. The stuff is like board, and has a wonderfully tactility to it with its deckled edges and rough texture. To increase the textural contrast between the giclées and the mounting paper, we ran all of the prints under a heated steel plate in a 100-ton press, making them silky-smooth. Finally they were stamped with our printer’s chop, and signed and numbered by Glenn.

It’s a special image, and we are honored to have been able to give it the treatment it deserves. Take one home for yourself at pressureprinting.com.

The rundown:

Glenn Barr: Evening

  • Embossed printer’s chop
  • Signed and numbered by the artist

I've seen this print up close and personal.
( I had to sign 'em) and feel Brad Keech and the Pressure Printing folks did an outstanding job at reproducing this painting. The detail is amazing and the color is "right on"... the heavy stock gives it weight and really makes it a substantial edition. simply beautiful.
thanks Brad!... glenn barr
